Can I Change My LPG Supplier?

The short answer is: it depends on your estate's arrangement. Unlike mains gas and electricity, LPG supplier switching on metered estates is more complex due to the infrastructure requirements.

📋 Check Your Current Arrangement

Most metered LPG estates have contracts with specific suppliers that cover the entire development. Individual residents typically cannot switch suppliers independently, but estate management companies or residents' associations may be able to negotiate better rates or change suppliers collectively. You can also apply to be a "elected representative" of the residents on your estate with their written permission, otherwise known as a "Letter of Authority". This needs to then be sent to your current supplier, who can then renegotiate your cost per litre depending on; whether at least 90% of the residents are out of contract, the number of houses using the bulk supply, the distance from the depot and how many litres of propane you use per year.

Types of LPG Estate Arrangements

Many new developments have long-term contracts negotiated by the developer or management company. These contracts often include:

2. Residents' Association Managed

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does it take to switch suppliers?

A: The process typically takes 2-6 months, depending on contract terms, infrastructure requirements, and the complexity of your estate's setup.

Q: Will switching disrupt our gas supply?

A: Properly managed switches should have minimal disruption. The new supplier coordinates with the old one to ensure continuous supply during the transition.

Q: Can individual residents object to a supplier change?

A: This depends on your estate's governance structure. Some require unanimous consent, others operate by majority vote, and some allow management companies to decide independently.

Q: What happens if the new supplier goes out of business?

A: Unlike mains gas, there's no automatic supplier of last resort for LPG. This is why it's important to choose financially stable, well-established suppliers.

Q: Are there any hidden costs when switching?

A: Potential costs include early termination fees from your current supplier, infrastructure modification costs, and setup fees for the new supplier. Always clarify these upfront.
